Potential predators may loiter around or simply wait for prey sitting around in their parked cars. These are things you should do while walking through a deserted or suspicious area.
Walk rapidly and with conviction. Pay careful attention to your environment. If someone's stares or presence are making you uncomfortable, a stern look will send the message that you're not gullible and they'll be getting themselves into a world of hurt if they were to assault you. It also means that you can easily identify them to the police. Predators prefer sneaking up on you and this defeats that purpose.
Finally, keep your keys out in your hands, ready to be used as weapons if necessary and always keep your dominant hand free of shopping bags or stuff.

She was coming out to her car on a seemingly regular day when out of nowhere, this maniac comes out and grabs her from behind! It sure looks like she's got nothing to do but what she did after... let's just say this guy picked the wrong woman to mess with!
