Many of us know that builders and hotel owners avoid numbering their rooms or floors as 13, because they believe that number 13 is a devil's number and has many negative things associated with it.
Also people avoid staying in room no. 306, because Martin Luther King was assassinated in the same room number.
But, now I'm going to tell you one interesting fact about the number 420. Very few people must have noticed that most of the hotels avoid using room no. 420, after 419, they directly rent room 421 by skipping the 420 room. Now the question arises, why they do so?
#4 Origins of 420 Room number
The number 420 has a connection with weed, since 4/20 and 4:20 are celebrated by pot smokers around the world.
The exact connection of the pot smokers and 420 dates back in 1970s. It was in California, when the school boys used to gather at 4:20 pm and smoke marijuana. "The Waldos" is what they used to call themselves.

#3 The Past
Back there in 1980's to avoid this kind of behavior by the guests , few hotel owners removed metallic number plates from room doors and painted room number instead.
Also other hotel owners came up with a creative idea to replace the number 420 by "419+1." Many hotels in Colorado use number 419.9 instead of 420. Its quite upsetting for the weed smokers who believe so much in their tradition.
#2 Main Reason
It is believed that the number 420 is associated and has a strong connection with the "Pot Smokers."
This unspoken tradition of not using the room number 420 was started by many posh hotels 8-10 years ago. Because, a lot a cases were registered where the guests high on weed stole the room number, trashed the room at the time of party. This forced the hotel owners to stop using the room no. 420.

#1 Its Not Just 420
It is not only the number 420 which is been avoided, but there are other numbers too. Thanks to all the books, movies and few real life events. Room no. 237 made infamous by 'The Shining' or 217 by Stephen King's actual book.
Many guest refused to stay in stay in rooms where famous celebrities have passed away in that particular room number. Like, Martin Luther King junior (306), Janis Joplin (105), Jimi Hendrix (507), and Whitney Houston (434).
