So how do we get rid of that rust? Well, you could send it in to a professional. But that could be quite pricey. Almost as pricey as getting a brand new skillet. But we promised to get it done for free.
So here is what you will need to Do It Yourself:
1. Raw potatoes
2. Quite a bit of kosher salt
3. An old towel you won't mind getting a little greasy or dirty
4. A bit of unflavored Crisco.

#1 The Process
So now that we've told you about all the important ingredients that you'll need to Rescue A Rusted Cast Iron Skillet, time to note down the exact procedure. The process is this...
Put some salt in your skillet and scrub it in with the potato (cut the end off to give you a flat surface). Get salt into all of the rust spots. Rinse. Repeat if necessary. Dry the skillet. You may need do the salt/potato and rinse cycle again if you're not yet satisfied.
Next, you'll want to rub the Crisco into your skillet. That's it, you're done. Yes. Finished.
It can't get any simpler, can it? In the future, avoid washing your skillet with soap and water- clean it with soap and a towel after every use. Do not use the dishwasher.
