HOW IT ALL STARTED
Diana Kim was merely 5 years old when her parents split. This Korean American girl lived along with her mother, sometimes sleeping in parks or at other friends or relatives. Life was tough, recalls Kim. But it always was her strongest learning curve.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Her dad had a studio when she was young. In fact her first intrigue towards the camera came from her dad itself. Over the years as everything fell apart, she too lost touch with her dad...but not with the skill he taught her!
BACK TO BASICS
When Diana was in college, she took to photographing homeless people as a part of her project. This continued even after she became a professional photographer. This project was very close to her heart, probably because of her rough childhood and the fact that she could understand their feeling of being forgotten...This was her, going back to where she had risen from...
FINDING HER DAD
One day she was out photo documenting in Honolulu when something strange happened. This man she realized was her own father. Now frail and having lost all physical and mental balance, he could not recognize her.. but she knew, when she saw him instantly that it was her dad.
THE EFFORTS
But her father didn't remember her and from here started her struggle to get her dad to remember her...every day she would visit him but he would just not bother or even get around to recognizing her.
THE DNA
Its so strange that photography was the skill that trickled down to Diana in her DNA and that is exactly the skill that helped her find her dad after so many years and in a way, brought them closer
THAT DAY
Everyday was a challenge and a big rejection. Her dad just didn't acknowledge her. One day he had a heart attack on the street and someone took him to the hospital. On getting treatment in the hospital, he also started getting healthier - physically and mentally
EVERYDAY IS A NEW DAY
Now, that her father is recovering, Kim finds herself motivated every single day. Its like bridging a gap of all these years and moving on positively. She mentions how taking care of her father brings immense peace to her life. A life lesson is learnt here indeed!
