#3 Chicken Recalled
If you are a huge chicken fan and cannot imagine your meal without it, this one is for you! You might want to set aside time to look through your refrigerator tonight because there are reports that an additional 500,000 pounds of chicken might be contaminated with Salmonella. A Chicago company is expanding a massive recall of frozen, raw, stuffed and breaded chicken products being sold under a multitude of brands.
Just to add on to it, Aspen Foods is recalling 561,000 pounds of ready-to-eat meat that may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service. Just so that you know, after recalling nearly 2 million pounds of frozen, raw, stuffed, and breaded chicken in July, Aspen Foods is expanding the recall following additional Salmonella testing.
#2 What is Salmonella
Now the question is, what exactly is Salmonella? So it is a rod shaped bacteria that belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family. Salmonellae are found worldwide in both cold-blooded and warm-blooded animals, and in the environment. Strains of Salmonella cause illnesses such as typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever and food poisoning.
The chicken is infected by Salmonella. According to a news release from the USDA, the affected chicken was produced between August 25, 2015 and September 17, 2015 with "best if used by" dates between August 23, 2016 and December 15, 2016. The original recall included products with "best if used by" dates as early as July 14, 2016. Also, five people who became ill in Minnesota were linked to the contaminated chicken.
