Being the only doctor at the base, with no means of help, he had to operate on himself. The man not only performed the self-surgery with help of a few men but also recovered in as less as 2 weeks!

Stationed at one of the coldest places on the planet, Arctic explorer Peter Freuchen was snow banked during a storm. When he couldn't get out by digging with his bare hands, he used his frozen feces to do the needful. But when he returned to the camp, he was in for a shock! His feet were frostbitten, so he used a hammer and pinchers and amputated his fingers without anesthesia!

Finnish sniper Simo Hayha has the record for the most kills in the world. He served as a sniper against the Red Army during the winter war against Russia killing over 505 targets. Using rifles without telescopic sights and shooting bullets in temperatures between -40°C and -20 °C, the man proved his skills. Until the enemy blew his left cheek off!

The project Mercury flights were supposed to be fully automated, except the last flight "Flight 7”. During the end of the mission, the flight developed problems with forced astronaut Cooper to manually control the console. Using his knowledge of stars and his wristwatch, he landed the aircraft... only 4 miles away from the target!

Having undergone a major blood transfusion (around 13 liters) at 14 years of age, the boy decided to donate blood once he turned 18. This is when they found his blood contained rare antibodies to fight Rhesus disease. Since then, Harrison has donated more than a 1,000 times and saved over 2.4 million lives including that of his own daughter!

Marshall was working on spiral bacteria and gastritis when he and his associate hypothesized that bacteria H.Pylori caused peptic and gastric ulcer. As it normally happens in the field of science, nobody believed him. Enraged and to prove a point, he gulped down an entire petri dish of the bacteria, developed stomach ulcers and treated himself with antibiotics while logging it. If this didn't win a Nobel prize, we don't know what did!
