Most of us have been to the airport. Whilst we are going through procedures and check-ups, our bags and luggage are going through a journey of their own. How is it that the airport security people know everything there is to know without us ever having to tell them about our luggage or them opening up our luggage?

Here we are gonna see and understand one of the most important airport security measures and its working.

The airport scanner's set up is quite simple. Most airport scanners have two sources. One of them is fixed at the side while the other is suspended from the top. This positioning of the sources helps give two different views of the object being scanned. If an object is hid from one point of view, the other instantaneously shows it.

The results from the airport scanner are instantaneous. But did you know that these scanners also identify the items inside your luggage?

The scanner has two levels of x-ray intensity. And it is this two-level x-ray system along with a central sensor that provides results that are more accurate and informative than any conventional x-ray system.

The information gathered from the scanning is sent to a computer which uses identification algorithms to determine the object identity.

The algorithms then calculate the Z effective number and mass density of the objects in the bag. Some objects have identical z effective numbers and mass density values individually, but when both are combined, the identity of an unknown substance becomes evident.

The X-rays first impacts the plate-like detector, the energy, and position of the same is recorded. Then, the process shifts towards a second detector, but there exists a filter between the two blocks low-energy X-rays. Meanwhile, the second detector happens to collect only high-energy X-rays. And that is how by the comparing of resultant outputs from both the detectors, one is able to know not only the position of the object through an image but also their density and composition.
