This Man Was Richer Than Today's Gates' And Buffets'. Yet, No One Knows Him...
We know money as the object (a very inappropriate word) that you can use in exchange to get things you like, want or need. But how many of us can actually give out money just because well we want to?
Such was this man we are going to talk about. I bet, you don't know him. 99% of the world doesn't know him or remembers him.
#6 Musa I
The man that we are talking about is Musa I. Musa I was the mansa (or Emperor) of the gold-rich Mali Empire from 1312 to 1337.
Musa I was very rich will be an understatement. Musa I was very very rich is also a very very under the par statement. So the question is, how rich was he?
Well, keep reading ahead to see how rich Musa I was.
#5 Worth $400 Billion
For starters, let's just say that this man was far more rich than our current richest people. The amount of money Musa was said to have is estimated to be a staggering $400 billion in today's money.
In fact, a story of Musa going for Haj and disrupting the economy of the places he visited on his way is very popular.
Musa I was the Emperor of Mali. Mali was a kingdom built entirely on gold. The gold in Mali came from three massive gold mines at Bambuk, Boure, and Galam that were added to the Empire's lands in the early days of conquering.
Mali had so much gold that it provided half of the gold for the entirety of Africa, Europe, and Asia by the 14th century. Musa became the king of this Mali which automatically made him the richest man on planet.
#3 Journey To Mecca
The previous mansa disappeared when he tried to take a journey around the world by boat, and so the crown went to Musa. While he was on the throne, he decided to visit the holy land of Mecca.
His Entourage Was Insanely Large. His journey lasted for about two years. He took an estimated personal guard of 500 men with him, plus over 100 gold-laden elephants, and a few hundred camels to carry all of the supplies for the journey.
#2 Lot Of Gold
Just so that you know, he carried along around $500 Million in gold with him and distributed it amongst everyone he met during the course of his entire journey.
"At each halt he would regale us [his entourage] with rare foods and confectionery. He also brought 80 loads of gold dust, each load weighing three qintars," Arab historian Ibn Khaldun said. If you calculate that, it would be 26,455 pounds of gold for the trip. If we take that number and multiply it by the cost of gold per pound today, that's over $566 million in gold. Now that's a lot of gold.
#1 The Richest Man Ever
This great man was passing out so much gold that it literally was too common to be worth all that much anymore. This shook the economy of all the places around. Because the entire economy at that time was based on gold, when gold stopped being all that valuable and everyone had some, everything else in the economy went crazy and essentially broke.
He later tried to correct his mistake after realizing what he has done. He started borrowing the gold back from money-lenders at a very high interest rate. By taking the gold back but at a higher value, he is said to have righted the economy that he'd just finished wrecking.
He was so rich that he founded one of the world's best libraries and universities in the city of Timbuktu (which made that city a legend in itself).
No one had any clue about this guy until recently when someone dragged his story online for others to read. This man is definitely the richest man to ever live!
