A CIA Officer under JFK, E.Howard Hunt served 33 months in prison for his part in the Watergate scandal. On his deathbed, he made a series of carefully recorded confessions of his involvement in the assassination and other key participants in it. Rolling Stone got a hold of it and ran it, but the news failed to make the impact it should have made.

During 1947, Haut was the public information officer at the 509th Bomb Group which was based in Roswell, New Mexico. On July 8, 1947 he was instructed by the then base commander, Colonel William Blanchard, to prepare a report to the public that the US Air Force had recovered a crashed 'flying disk' on a nearby ranch. But the statement was withdrawn the same day and a new statement telling that it was just a weather balloon that crash landed was released. Prior to his death, many years later Haut not only confessed but also signed an affidavit saying that he was forced to tell the weather balloon story while in reality he had witnessed the wreckage of an egg-shaped craft and its extraterrestrial crew.
