Ever Wondered Why Cops Touch Your Car's Tail Light After Pulling You Over?
One of the worst feelings in the world is the feeling of getting caught by a police man mid drive. No one really likes it. Have you ever been under such a situation?
I hope not! But well, the fact is that sometimes we do break the traffic rules and pay for it. Owing to the same, most of us are confused about one ritual followed by cops religiously. Ever wondered why cops touch your car's tail light after pulling you over?
#4 The Routine
Believe it or not but cops love doing their 'tail light tap'. This is a routine that they hardly miss. Logically, such a tap makes less sense for a cop to indulge in.
What do you think can possibly be the reason behind such a tap? We'll reveal it right now.
Keep reading ahead to see the reason.
#3 Some History
No ritual in the world was ever started without a valid reason. Even this practice by cops has a history to it. Marilyn Caylor gives us one of those very a few logical reasons.
She says, "the ritual of touching a tail light actually goes back to the good old days of policing the highways. Before the invention of dash cams, policemen were super sneaky with their tactics. But don't worry, they weren't crooked cops or doing anything illegal. In fact, these law enforcement officers were actually hoping to catch the driver or passengers unawares. You see, it's not uncommon for people to try and hide their illicit drugs or guns right after they are pulled over by a cop. Tapping the tail light has the benefit of startling these criminals before they can finish hiding their stash of ill-gotten goods."
There are more reasons by the way!
#2 The Fingerprint Theory
There's another theory to this tapping the tail light business of cops. It is called 'The Fingerprint Theory'.
If you think about it, this is a very smart theory. They say, if the officer touches your car's rear light, his fingerprints will be there to find you in case you decide to attack him or worse, kill him.
#1 Nothing More Than A Ritual
Many people also believe that this isn't anything more than a ritual. There's no meaning attached to it. In fact, today, there are very few cops who do it.
In this day in age, police departments are said to be advising cops not to practice the ritual of tail light tapping anymore as it can help criminals to identify the exact location of a cop they might wish to shoot or do other harm to in less light. Sensible!
