He recall motor from old film projectors at the USC Cinema Department that made a musical "hum", he recorded that motor, and a few days later he had a broken microphone cable that caused the recorder to accidentally pick up the buzz from the back of TV picture tube.

He'd recorded that buzz, and mixed it with the hum of the projector motor. And now we have our favorite lightsaber sound.
