This Is How An Airbag Works When There Is A Car Accident
John W. Hetrick of Newport, Pennsylvania, who came up with the idea after an accident in which he swerved his car off the road into a ditch to avoid hitting a rock, almost throwing his daughter through the windshield.
Airbags are standard in most of the cars now and while taken as a joke when they started out back in the 1970s, they have become quite effective over time and work in collaboration with the seat-belts to keep the driver and passenger safe in case of a collision.
Airbags are very simple but also amazingly clever, because they have to open up at over 300 km/h (200mph)-faster than a car can crash! Let's take a closer look at how they work.
#2. How Airbags Help
An airbag is more correctly known as a supplementary restraint system (SRS) or supplementary inflatable restraint (SIR). The word "supplementary" here means that the airbag is designed to help the seatbelts protect you rather than replace them (relying on an airbag to protect you without fastening your seatbelt is extremely dangerous).
The basic idea is that the airbag inflates as soon as the car starts to slow down in an accident and deflates as your head presses against it. That's important: if the bag didn't deflate, your head would just bounce back off it and you'd be no better off.

#1. Few Pointers and Video
A few pointers to keep in mind are as follows;
- The ideal distance between the airbag and breastbone is 10 inches.
- Those who are under 5'4" (adults and children) should be riding with airbags switched off to avoid any injury taking place to their head or neck during the collision.
- Children in backward-facing infant seats must never be in the front seat while the airbag is engaged.
