#8 This Is What Sand Looks Like Magnified 250x

This picture shows a handful of sand grains selected from a beach in Maui and arranged on a black background. The formation of sand is a long and time consuming process. Taking the parts of the picture into account you can see that the tip of a spiral shell has broken off and become a grain of sand. This tip is now many times smaller than it originally was. After being repeatedly tumbled by action of the surf this spiral sand grain has become opalescent in character. Not just the spiral shell, the pieces surrounding it are bits of coral, a pink shell fragment, a foram (a type of protozoa) and volcanic material. All of these substances have an individual story and individual characteristics. Each grain of sand is as special and magical as a snow flake.

#7 The True Size Of Africa

#7 The True Size Of Africa

Africa is so mind-numbingly immense, that it exceeds the common assumptions by just about anyone I ever met. If someone were to ask you how many countries you could fit into Africa the answer would be a lot more than you would expect. Even after adding the entirety of the U.S.A and China there would be enough space to fit 10 more. These include most of Europe, India, Pakistan and even all of Japan. The table on the side shows how it could even fit countries that haven't showed up here. The creator of this map made this to make one simple point: "NO - this was not at all an attempt to create 'an accurate map', it was merely a simple graphical depiction of the statement. The UK is not the same size as Madagascar well DUH... that is PRECISELY the point I was making, in action: Madagascar is much larger!"

#6 The Rhyme Never Says He's An Egg

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.

While there are many minor changes in the last two lines, this version is how the story goes. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, "humpty dumpty" was first used in the 17th century and referred to brandy boiled with ale. It is assumed that the nursery rhyme was originally intended as a riddle. The answer to the riddle, of course, is "an egg" - something that, if it rolled off a wall, could not be mended by any number of people.

Another theory states that Humpty Dumpty was in fact an unusually large canon which was mounted on the protective wall of "St. Mary's Wall Church" in Colchester, England. A shot from a Parliamentary cannon succeeded in damaging the wall beneath Humpty Dumpty which caused the cannon to tumble to the ground. No matter how hard the The Royalists, or Cavaliers, 'all the King's men' attempted to raise Humpty Dumpty on to another part of the wall. Their failure to do so resulted in the fall of the city and thus the start of the story.

#5 Russia Has A Larger Surface Area Than Pluto

Everyone knows about all of the debate surrounding Pluto. Everyone knows that it is being called too small to be considered a planet, but does anyone know just how small Pluto is? In terms of diameter, Pluto is only about 2400 km across, which would easily fit within Russia's largest east-to-west width of 10,000 km. It would also fit within the largest north-to-south size of 4000 km. Lets just talk surface area, in a head-to-head surface area comparison of Russia vs Pluto, Russia is slightly larger at 17,075,200 square kilometers, while Pluto is 16,647,940 square kilometers. Did that help you finally pick a side on the Pluto debate?

The children's songs - The alphabet song, baa baa black sheep and twinkle twinkle little star all have the same tune. I'll give you a moment to remember and sing them all in your head. Do you hear it? This is because all 3 are actually based on Mozart's piano composition 'Ah! vous dirai-je, maman'. The simple melody and progression make it easier for a child to learn and remember it.

#3 Oxford University Is Older Than The Aztec Empire

As early as 1096, teaching had already started in Oxford. By 1249, the University of Oxford had grown into a full-fledged university, replete with student housing at the school's three original "halls of residence". When was the Aztec Empire formed? The Aztec civilization as we know it began with the founding of Tenochtitlan in 1325. Oxford University also predates the invention of the English language. (The one we know, Old English existed before it but would be illegible to any English reader)

#2 France Was Still Executing People By Guillotine When 'Star Wars: A New Hope' Hit Theaters.

It's true! France whacked off someone's head by guillotine in 1977. The famous and infamous blade dropped for the last time at Les Baumettes prison in Marseilles on Hamida Djandoubi, a Tunisian immigrant convicted of the torture-murder of the naive young girlfriend he had forced into prostitution. However the guillotine was only abolished with the election of the Francois Mitterand government in 1981.
