The little child was complaining of itching and it completely looked like a regular poison oak reaction. In fact, that's what the doctor also diagnosed it as.

After a few failed courser of antiviral and antibiotic medicines, the doctors had ruled out but one possibility.

SJS - Steven Johnsons Syndrome is a very rare and serious disorder of the skin and mucous membranes. It causes your skin to blister and peel off. But because blisters also form inside the body, the symptoms are extremely painful and you have difficulty even swallowing water.

And Zachary had it. Did he survive? Read on to find out.

"We never even thought what was going on with him could have been an allergic reaction because he had been on it for 12 days. So I thought surely if he was having some type of reaction to it then it would have happened the first night that he had taken it. I was giving him the very thing that was killing him and had no idea."

Zachary was then sent to Batsons Children Hospital for 4 days where a dermatologist did a biopsy on him. He confirmed that Zachary in fact had SJS and it had progressed onto the later stages.

When Mandy and her husband asked the doctor if he would be okay, he said:
"I don't know. He looks like a very sick littel boy."

...and sometimes they don't.

Zachary had to be airlifted to another hospital that was more experienced in dealing with SJS but by then the poor little boy's skin had started coming off!

Needless to say, he cried all the way there.

As soon as they arrived, the doctors placed Zachary under a medically induced coma and they would be performing one of the most complicated surgeries ever. They were going to remove all his skin and wrap him in "biobrane" while his new skin would grow under it.

Before his surgery Mandy told her son how much she loved him and that she would always love him.

"A few hours later they allowed me to come back into the ICU. He was completely wrapped up from head to toe, and had tubes everywhere, with a machine breathing for him. I broke down. I was so overwhelmed and just could not believe that this was actually happening. The only question I could ask the doctor was 'is he going to make it?'"

As it turns out, Zachary did make it out and today he recounts his experiences to his mom:
"While I was in the coma, I was never actually asleep. A strong angel named Samson held me in his arms, and I had also seen my 'mawmaw patsy' who had passed. I laid in her lap and she scratched my back"

Is this what comas really feel like?
