#9 An Experience To Be Shared

Little kids are such wonder at time. In theirown little way they redefine the things we think we already know in this world.

Here is one story where a little girl being who she was started a chain reaction that started something- something beautiful and heartwarming.

This story was shared by Tara Woods, who long with her husband, Garrett, are the proud parents of seven children and this is the story of their daughter Norah. Tara shared this story by posting it on TODAY parenting.

Little Norah was just turning 4, when she grew curious about old people and why she happened to like them so much. In her own words, little Norah said that "love 'em all up before they is died," since they are nearing the end of their life spans.

The day of her birthday....

Tara took her daughter to the grocery store after school. As they were in the bakery looking for cupcakes, when Norah...........

As Tara was in a clearance section looking for some good deals, Norah was jumping up and down waving her hands, trying to catch the attention of an old man nearby. When all of a sudden, Norah said out loud..

'Hi old person! It's my birfday today!'

Needlessly to say, Tara was worried like any considerate parent would be that the elderly man would take offense to the little one's cheerful announcement. And as the man turned, stone-faced, and furrow-browed, Tara prepared for a telling off. When all of a sudden the elderly man's expression softened and replied back...

'Well, hello little lady! And how old are you today?'

And so, the trio chatted for a while and parted ways. But the story does not end here......

Not so long after their first meeting, on the same day Tara and her daughter ran into the old man again in another aisle. And this time, Tara approached him with a request.

'Excuse me, sir? This is Norah, and she'd like to know if you'd take a photo with her for her birthday?'

Her simple request moved the elder man so much that he took a step back, steadied himself against the shopping cart and placed his other hand on his chest, asking in a shaken voice,'A photo? With me?'

And the little Nora pleaded,'Yes, suh, for my birfday!'

And who could say no to that?

Tara explains this moment the best....

'I pulled out my iPhone and they posed together. She placed her soft hand on top of his soft hand. He wordlessly stared at her with twinkling eyes as she kept his hand in hers and studied his skinny veins and weathered knuckles. She kissed the top of his hand and then placed it on her cheek. He beamed. I asked his name, and he told us to call him 'Dan.''

Even though their little entourage was blocking the other shoppers, no one dared break the magical moment as the little girl and old man chatted away like two old long lost friends.

After a few minutes of being together, Tara thanked Mr. Dan for his kindness and spending some time with her child. But Mr. Dan replied,'No, thank YOU. This has been the best day I've had in a long time. You've made me so happy, Miss Norah.'

And as the two new friends hugged and bid their goodbyes, Norah watched Mr.Dan was out of sight. But Tara was an emotional mess after this little encounter. She felt the need to share her story and posted it with a couple of pictures of both Mr.Dan and Norah.

And then a heartbreaking revelation....

After the story was posted, that night Tara received a private message from someone who happened to know Mr. Dan. It was then Tara got to know that Mr. Dan's wife Mary had passed away in March, after which Mr.Dan had become very lonely. But the incident at the grocery store had touched his heart. The friend told she felt that Mr.Dan was in need of this experience and he would never forget it.

Tara asked the friend for Mr. Dan's number and called him up!

And that's how Tara and Norah ended up visiting Mr.Dan at his cozy and tidy home, memories of his late wife Mary was still strong around the house. And Mr. Dan cleaned up pretty good himself too! He had gotten a haircut, shaved, and was wearing slacks and dress shoes when Tara and Norah arrived, looking 10 years younger!

Mr.Dan set out a child’s table, blank paper, and crayons out for Norah and asked the little one if she would draw a picture for him to display in his refrigerator. Norah was more than happy to comply!

The mother and daughter spent nearly 3 hours with Mr.Dan! Tara says,'He was patient and kind with my talkative, constantly moving girl. He wiped ketchup off of her cheek and let her finish his chicken nuggets.'

Wait! There's more!

And as they made their way to the front door of Mr.Dan's house, he pulled out a pocket knife and cut the single red rose blooming by his porch. He spent ten minutes cutting every thorn off of the stem before handing it to his new friend.

Norah 'keeps that rose, now dry as a bone, in a Ziploc bag under her pillow.'

The beginning of an unique friendship....

Norah worries about her new friend Mr.Dan every day! She wonders if he's lonely, or cold, or has cheese for his sandwiches. She wants him to be okay. She wants him to feel loved!

And Mr.Dan cherishes Norah too, during a recent Mr.Dan confessed to Tara that, he wasn't able to sleep in peace ever since his wife passed away. But since he met Norah, he sleeps peacefully.

'Norah has healed me,' he said.

Oh my...

And that's how two people, who are so different in their age, managed to forge a friendship like no other. Tara and Nora make it a point to visit Mr.Dan every week, even if its for just 15 minutes, they make sure to give him a hug and bring his favorite cheese danish.

Tara says, "I've invited him to spend Thanksgiving with us. He's part of our family now. Whether he likes it or not, he's been absorbed into my family of nine and just like Norah said, "We're gonna love him all up."

"Sometimes talking to strangers can lead to beautiful new beginnings."

"Give it a try."

So, will you?
