The Division of the Pack

This image shared in December 2015 carried information stating that the first three wolves marching ahead are the old and the sick ones who set the pace of the group. The next five in the line are the strong ones to fight in times of need. Then the next is the rest of the crows followed by other 5 strongest wolves of the crowd.

In the end, it is the alpha who controls everything, sees things from the rear and gears the pack. The pack of wolves move in such a way to protect, watch and help each other.

This image, although popular, has been said to be accurate. This image was first featured in the BBC documentary of Frozen Planet in the year 2011 which stated that the alpha female led the pack and rest of the wolves followed in her track which saved energy.

The Debatable Truth About The Pack

The Debatable Truth About The Pack

Even though this description is more accurate than the one that was spread on multiple social media channels, there are many researchers who don’t prefer the idea of calling ‘alphas’. One of the researchers, David Mech, in one of his papers asserted that the concept of alpha isn’t something dominant in wild. As per his statements in his many rendezvous of wolf’s wildlife, he came across the alpha of the wolf’s pack who were mainly the parents of the pack.

Thus, referring a wolf an alpha is tantamount to call a human alpha. And for the parents, aren’t they always superior to their young offspring? Instead of calling the leader of the pack an alpha, one can also designate her as the matriarch, the breeding female or just the mother?
