Reasons Behind Chapped/Dry Lips And Easy Remedies
Lips are a very special and delicate part of the body. They have only 3-5 layers of skin as compared to the regular 16 layers in the rest of the body. Hence, they deserve to be taken good care of.
Repeated licking of the lips gives birth to a vicious cycle. As you lick your lips, the saliva evaporates taking away moisture from the lips and leaving them dry. Since they're dry, you want to lick them more. When do lick them again, they rob your lips or what little moisture they have left.
Licking your lips once in a while is fine, but making a habit out of it is not. And if you are habituated, breaking it would be the best course of action.
Also, ladies, beware of pigment matte lipsticks. It makes the lips itchy and dark in colour.
You might think this is a rather obvious reason for chapped lips but the most obvious things in life are often seen from hindsight. I'm including dehydration in this list because only when your body gets severely dehydrated does it start to affect the lips. So if it's not a dry winter day, or you forgot to put your lip balm or sunscreen on and getting chapped lips, you need to gulp down a big bottle of water. Don't wait till you faint.

There are a variety of diseases that can lead to repeated chapping of lips. Autoimmune diseases may cause your lips to become sensitive to the sun. Wear a lip balm with SPF 15.
Other diseases include psoriosis, perleche, angular cheilitis can also very well lead to dry lips. Chronic illnesses like a thyroid disease or diabetes also cause dryness of the lips and around the mouth.
So if you have had chapped lips persistently for a long time, you would be wise to get checked.
#7 Not Enough Protection
I have to admit it. I did not do this until my dermatologist told me to.
I use sunscreen regularly. I apply it to my face, neck and arms. Not my lips. I used to think it was unsafe to do so because I would end up swallowing it if I were to lick my lips. The heat of the sun and UV rays make a deadly combination for stealing moisture. Start applying sunscreen to your lips today!
#6 Peeling Flakes
I know it's tempting. I know. But you have to stop. Do not pull off flaking skin from your lips. It only serves to make your lips worse. It can leave your lips bleeding and with wounds. It also makes your lips more likely to get chapped in the future.
#5 Vitamin A Surplus
Too much of vitamin A in your system will cause dry or chapped lips. Check your intake and supplements. If you are exceeding 25,000 IU of Vitamin A. Conversely, a deficiency of Vitamin B could also cause the same.
#4 Medical Balms Are A Farce
Many balms in the marked as medicated which is their chief selling point. It's just a marketing gimmick. The ingredients provide temporary relief at best.
You must have heard about sodium lauryl sulphate as being the "poison" in the toothpaste. While it is poisonous only in large quantities, it is very harmful to the lips in toothpaste. It may cause chapping of lips if toothpaste is allowed to dry on your lips while brushing. Consider changing your toothpaste.

Citrus fruits contain acids that irritate the lips. Tomato sauce is a commonly used item that contains citric acid and makes regular contact with lips.
Cinnamic acid also does the same thing. It is found commonly in candy, gum and totthpaste.
