Nail biting has been seldom associated with health issues because of the exposure to bacteria and germs can cause infections if left open or untreated. In the rarest of the rare situations, this habit can be a cause of someone's death.

But Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry recently came out with a finding saying nail biting was indeed an indicator that the person might be a perfectionist. Usually, occurs when a person is vexed with imperfection. It can also result because of a fight with the spouse, work pressures or inability to achieve a goal.

Doctor Keiron O’Connor said that we believe that individuals with these behaviors may be perfectionistic and find it difficult to relax and perform tasks at a pace and that’s pretty normal.
He wrote,“We believe that individuals with these repetitive behaviors may be perfectionistic, meaning that they are unable to relax and to perform tasks at a normal pace. They are therefore prone to frustration, impatience, and dissatisfaction when they do not reach their goals.”
