10 Unbelievable Things Babies In The Past Had To Go Through!
During the late 19th Century and early 20th century, mothers were instructed to potty train their babies when they were just 2 months old. Mothers held their babies over chamber pots at appointed times in a day in hopes of potty training them. Apparently, it was said that the earlier the baby was potty trained, it would help keep the baby safe from diarrhea-causing infections.
#9 How the babies were bathed!
During the first week, babies were 'cleaned' using lard, butter or olive oil. Not soap and water.
#8 The baby was given beer!
Okay, we get it that Middle Ages were full of diseases and what not which lead to no one drinking water. But babies drinking beer? It's as strange as it can get. Even if it's very low in alcohol.
#7 The babies were given gin too!
Water and milk was highly contaminated back then, 18th century England to be exact. So, the poor drank gin. And so, did their babies.
#6 Show no affection, emotions or physical attention to the baby
In 1916 according to this psychologist John Watson, showing babies affection and emotions would wreck their nerves....? Unbelievable.
#5 No Breastfeeding when angry!
Thinking mean thoughts or being angry at someone when breastfeeding would give the baby colic?! Even nagging could do this, it was said.

Apparently, the doctors said it would lead to the mother going blind and the baby getting brain disease.
#3 Putting babies in a cage high above the street
A strange craze began in in 1930's where a cage would be fixed to a window and would protrude outwards towards the street. The baby would be kept inside these cages, while the parents stayed inside the apartment. Absolutely terrifying! The whole idea was that the baby could get fresh air......?!

There was a short-lived trend in the 18th century when mothers were told to stay away from the babies because of their small-brains and only men had the superior intelligence power to raise children. Now you know why it was short lived.
