10 Tips for Drivers That You Can’t Learn in a Driving School

A majority of adults drive cars, No, these tips and tricks won’t make you a certified mechanic or magically eliminate those people who can’t seem to exert enough energy to slightly lift one finger and use their turn signal, but they can make general upkeep and travel a little bit less stressful. Being an experienced driver doesn't mean you know everything there is to know about cars.Things like knowing that dishwashing liquid is actually useful when cleaning windows, how socks can keep your wipers from freezing in the winter. Here are some of the proven techniques used by drivers that you should practice every time you get behind the wheel.

Always keep your hands at 9 and 3

Always keep your hands at 9 and 3

Forget 10 and 2. FORGET IT. Luckily in most driver's ed classes today, teens are taught 9 and 3 because 10 and 2 is just downright dangerous if you've got an airbag.9 and 3 is also better because if you momentarily lose control, the second you get the car going the right way again, you want the steering wheel pointed straight ahead. With your hands at 9 and 3, all you have to do is bring them back to their resting position.

Use the hand brake regularly.

Even if you don’t do angle parking, use the hand brake regularly to keep it alive. The only exception is very cold weather. In such conditions, you’d better avoid using the hand brake so that the brake pads don’t freeze.

Don’t turn the wheels beforehand when making a left turn

Don’t turn the wheels beforehand when making a left turn

It’s dangerous to turn the wheels in advance before making a left turn. They must be in the initial position. If a car hits you from the back, you might be thrown into the opposite lane where hitting other cars will be inevitable.

Don’t let the illusion of low speed deceive you.

Don’t let the illusion of low speed deceive you.

On a straight road, the speed seems to be 2 times lower than it really is. If you don’t slow down before making a turn, the car may begin to skid.

Check if all your mirrors are adjusted correctly.

Check if all your mirrors are adjusted correctly.

If your mirrors aren’t adjusted correctly, a blind spot appears. A blind spot is a part of the road that you can’t see, so you may miss a car traveling in an adjacent traffic lane. In order to eliminate blind spots, adjust your side-view mirrors so that you can’t see your car in them. To check if there is a blind spot, drive past another parked car in reverse, looking in your side-view mirror. As soon as it’s out of the picture, you should see it with your peripheral vision.

Save fuel by removing unwanted weight in the car.

Save fuel by removing unwanted weight in the car.

Pretty self-explanatory, isn’t it? Well, yeah, but we bet everyone has a bunch of stuff that hasn’t left the trunk for ages! The problem is that fuel consumption goes up the more weight is in the car because the engine needs to burn through more fuel in order to accelerate and keep it moving

Don’t start the car right away in the winter.

Don’t start the car right away in the winter.

Just like pretty much everyone and everything, car batteries don’t really enjoy extremely cold temperatures. In fact, those really cold temperatures during the winter can be really harmful to your car battery if you don’t warm it up first.

Don’t focus on the car in front of you

Don’t focus on the car in front of you

If you keep your eyes glued to the car ahead of you, that's a big no-no. There's a ton of reasons this is unsafe, primarily because you’re more likely to do whatever that driver does. On a race track, that might mean taking a bad line (aka, following another driver and putting your car in a bad position). In the real world, it can be a bit more deadly. Do you really want to trust the texting teenager in front of you? Of course not.

Use the recirculation button when stuck in traffic to recirculate polluted air.

Use the recirculation button when stuck in traffic to recirculate polluted air.

Basically it recirculates the air inside your car, instead of pulling it from the outside. This could be useful if you’re stuck in traffic and the air outside fills with exhaust smoke. Just press the recirculation button to shut off the airflow from the outside. You can also do this during the summer to keep the inside air cool and refreshing. Pretty neat!

Lower your rear-view mirror at night.

Lower your rear-view mirror at night.

Many drivers don’t know that a standard rear-view mirror has 2 modes: day mode and night mode. To avoid being blinded by a car behind you, change the angle of the mirror by pulling down the lever under it.
