Top 10 Reasons To Be Proud Of The United States
Generosity (also called largess or largesse) is the habit of giving without expecting anything in return. In 2000, Americans gave more than $200 billion in charity, dwarfing the amount donated elsewhere. Since World War II, the U.S. government has given well in excess of $500 billion (not adjusted for inflation) in foreign aid. Last year, our government distributed more than $20 billion to 130 countries. While American taxpayers have a right to gripe, what are we to make of foreign beneficiaries who return our favor by burning U.S. flags and chanting "death to America"?
#9 Creativity, Productivity, and Innovation
Innovation is the application of new solutions that meet new requirements, inarticulate needs, or existing market needs. The number of cutting edge inventions and refinements of existing technologies that have come out of America in the last two hundred years is staggering. Everything from the airplane (1903) and phonograph (1877), to the drinking straw (1888) and feather duster (1870)and also world motion pictures, the telephone, the television, the computer, the Internet, the VCR have been the by-product of American ingenuity and resourcefulness.
#8 Freedom of Religion
In the United States, freedom of religion is a constitutionally guaranteed right provided in the religion clauses of the First Amendment. Freedom of religion is also closely associated with separation of church and state, a concept advocated by Thomas Jefferson. It is actually evidence of America's tolerance and diversity, and proof that in America, everybody is welcome to believe as they wish. If nothing else, America means freedom.
#7 Entrepreneurial Spirit
Do you really need examples? If so, consider the woman who starts selling homemade purses that she thinks women will want to buy, or a cook who decides to open a restaurant to feed people meals that he thinks they will appreciate. These humble business ideas gave birth to a multitude of mom and pop shops we find in every community across America, as well as many reputable corporations that employ thousands around the world. The initiative and creativity of these entrepreneurs feed us, clothe us, and revolutionize how people across the globe communicate. Initiative and creativity are responsible for the historic strength of our economy and the vast majority of jobs created in the United States. The ability of anyone to start a business and become wealthy in this country, as compared to most other nations, is one of the hallmarks of what America is all about.
#6 Compassion in War
Compassion is a Christian child sponsorship organization dedicated to the long-term development of children living in poverty around the world. America is no stranger to war, and has suffered through nearly a dozen of them throughout its long history. However, with a couple of debatable exceptions, America has never started a war, nor has it engaged in wars of conquest, even when it had the opportunity to expand its frontiers considerably. The Mexican-American war of 1845 is a good example of this; though the brief war ended in a Mexican rout, America not only didn't annex the country, but quickly withdrew once hostilities ended.
#5 Guardianship of Democracy
Leftists harp that American democracy is tainted because not everyone possessed the right to vote at the Founding. America's willingness to defend democracy and prevent oppressive regimes from expanding their totalitarian rule around the world, often at great cost in terms of lives, resources, and money, is one of the hallmarks of America. Despite the continued rejection by many foreign leaders, the ideals of the American Founding became contagious.
Will Nigerian doctors make the blind see? Will Cambodians cure AIDS? Will Pakistanis eradicate cancer? The answer is probably not. Why? The reason is that non-Westerners have had no discernable impact on modern medicine. Like 45 of the last 60, an American won a share of the Nobel Prize in the field of medicine. Americans cured polio and tuberculosis, developed vaccines for hepatitis B and yellow fever, pioneered modern chemotherapy, and produced the CAT scan and MRI. What's there to hate about that?
#3 Creating Wealth
America is the sun around which the world economy revolves. The typical creator of wealth in the world is an American. Foreigners benefit from buying better products from American companies and working better jobs manufacturing such products. Take America's $9 trillion dollar economy out of the picture, and the economic well being of the rest of the world nose-dives.
The culture of the United States is primarily a Western culture, but is also influenced by Native American, African, Asian, Polynesian, and Latin American cultures. The United States of America has its own unique social and cultural characteristics such as dialect, music, arts, social habits, cuisine, and folklore. Despite a lot of America bashing over the decades, apparently people still like what they see, which is why so many are willing to risk deportation and, in some cases, even imprisonment, to come here.
Beauty is a characteristic of a place or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure or satisfaction. There are many places of breath-taking beauty around the globe, with each country lying claim to its own natural wonders and extraordinary scenery, but no one country possesses such a broad range of natural wonders as does the United States. Stretching from California in the West, to New England in the East, the United States of America covers an area of 3.79 million square miles, making it the third largest nation on Earth, by area. Also, the U.S. is as diverse as it is huge, containing expansive national parks and vibrant cities which are visited by foreign tourists, local visitors and business travelers alike.
